Summer just started and it is time to start planting those new seeds for the season. I will be passing on real world seed planting but Stardew Valley is a great option for my virtual green thumb. The way you discover food recipes in-game is very similar to my normal food planning. Either you discover the recipe from mashing things together or from the television show “The Queen of Sauce.” Each Sunday, the player can catch a new recipe airing and reruns run on Wednesday. I love this addition to the game because I honestly can relate to it. There are numerous Sundays while cooking in the kitchen that I will have a food cooking show on. If I hear something interesting I’ll write it down for future testing.
A vegetable I don’t often cook with is the radish. When I saw the item in Stardew Valley, I was excited to start exploring what I could do with this vegetable. In game, one of the recipes you can learn from “The Queen of Sauce” is a radish salad. This recipe require a decent amount of cutting work but once you get past that, it is just a simple toss and let sit in the refrigerator. Due to the vinegar in the recipe, you will have to consume it the day you make it because the salad will lose its crisp bite over time.
Ingredients:
2 cucumber, thinly sliced
9 radish, thinly sliced
1 shallot, chopped
¼ cup cilantro, thinly sliced
¼ cup rice vinegar
1 tbsp olive oil
3 tbsp sugar
½ lemon, juiced
2 tsp salt
2 tsp black sesame seeds
1 tsp white sesame seeds
Combine the rice vinegar, olive oil, sugar, lemon juice, and salt in a small bowl. Toss together the cucumber, radish, shallot, and cilantro in a medium bowl.
Pour the dressing over the mixed vegetables and toss until well coated. Add the sesame seeds and mix one more time. Place in the refrigerator and let it set for at least 1 hour.
Serve this salad the same day it is made. The next day the veggies will start to break down due to the vinegar.
