Overwatch: Nano Cola

September 4, 2018 By Victoria Rosenthal

Overwatch: Nano Cola
In the latest Overwatch animated short, Shooting Star, we finally get a glimpse into the past of our favorite MEKA pilot, D.Va. After a narrow victory defending South Korea from the Gwishin Omnics, there is a sudden unexpected attack that forces D.Va, the only MEKA pilot available, to defend her country by herself. Outnumbered but not outmatched, she works with her friend to eliminate the invading menace by overloading her MEKA’s core and saving Busan once more.

Overwatch: Nano Cola Can
As a huge fan of D.Va, I’m happy to get a bit more insight into her past. It was also really nice to see the inspiration for her ultimate move she has available in game. I know these animated shorts take time to make but I do hope to see a lot more of these from Blizzard. I love the characters in the game and the more lore about the world the happier I am. Who are you hoping to see more information about? I have my fingers crossed that the next character to be focused on is Lucio.

D.Va ScreenshotOut of all the characters in Overwatch, D.Va is the character that best represents esports. Blizzard even added a legendary emote of her gaming and chowing down on D.Va chips and some cola. I have previously made a batch of D.Va chips and now I get to finally make its partnering drink, Nano Cola. I’ve wanted to make the drink for some time now, but I fortunately waited long enough to have direction from Blizzard’s short, the Busan map, and concept art about D.Va. Homemade soda might seem intimidating but it is not too bad. You will need to create the citrus syrup base and the final steps are to mix it with some club soda, citric acid, and ice. If you don’t want the drink to be overly sour, reduce or completely remove the citric acid. Just keep in mind that you’ll lose some of the bite that you usually get from soda if you do.

Ingredients:
Citrus Syrup
1 cup water
1 ½ cups sugar
2 lemon, juice (⅓ cup) and 4 peels
4 lime, juice (⅓ cup) and 5 peels
½ orange, juice (¼ cup) and 1 peel
3 slices of ginger
2 drops neon green food dye
2 tsp lemon extract

Soda (per serving)
1 ¼ cup club soda
7-9 tbsp citrus syrup
1 tsp citric acid
ice

Combine the water, sugar, lemon peels, lime peels, orange peel, and ginger in a saucepan. Place over medium-high heat. Whisk until the sugar has dissolved and bring to a boil.

Reduce the heat and simmer for 20 minutes. Remove from the heat and strain into an airtight container. Add the lemon, lime, and orange juice. Mix in the food dye and lemon extract. Allow to cool.

Once cooled, cover, and store in refrigerator for at least 12 hours and up to 2 weeks.

To make a serving, combine the syrup, citric acid, and ice in a cup. Pour in the club soda and stir.

My husband actually made it digitally. He did a great job of making it look like a real can.

That looks suspiciously like Mountain Dew.

Still, I must assume that it’s good.

A lot of the inspiration for this drink’s color came from Mountain Dew. This homemade version is much lighter and a bit more refreshing than the store bought soda.

Club soda is a carbonated water. The brand I typically find in my grocery store is Cananda Dry. For each serving of Nano Cola I use one of that.

Citric acid is powder that is used often in jarring and will add a very acidic (sour) flavor to the drink. The specific one I use is Ball Jar Citric Acid. This can be left out but it really adds a nice sour punch to the drink.

Another option would be to add so extra lemon juice (or additional lemon extract) to the syrup. Honestly the drink would be pretty good without the citric acid just not as sour. I’ve found with a few recipes now that citric acid increases the sour levels.

If it is difficult to fine the drink should be fine without it just a bit less sour.

If you want to give this drink a glow, I would suggest you use a teaspoon of Riboflavin and stir it before you use a black light. Doesn’t that sound cool?

Oh that is interesting. I’ve never worked with riboflavin before but shall keep that in mind.
