Overcooked 2: Honey Chocolate Cake

March 14, 2019 By Victoria Rosenthal

The Overcooked series is one of my favorite food themed games. The controlled chaos that happens during a round is one of the most amazing things I’ve seen in a game. I love sitting on the couch with teammates and eventually yelling at one another to make sure our kitchen doesn’t burn to the ground. This is a game I cannot play solo. I’ve tried several times handling two chefs in the kitchen and my brain explodes. Most of my experience has been with Jeff and I can say this game has only brought us closer together. There are times we goof and just have to completely restart but the whole experience is so enjoyable. After an hour or so of playing I typically need to stop because I was so focused and haven’t blinked that whole time.

Cakes can be tricky. I sometimes find myself cursing them while I bake them. One of my weaknesses is decoration and Overcooked 2 does a good job of making a delicious and simple cake design. In later levels, your chefs learn how to make honey cakes. Of course, I had to match the chef in game and make myself a batch of these cakes. In the game you can make either a white or chocolate cake variety. Since I love chocolate, I decided to make this recipe a honey chocolate cake. To get the flavor of honey throughout the cake, I used it both in the frosting and in the cake itself. On top of that, I added honeycomb. The honeycomb is optional because it is a bit pricey. It does add a nice flavor and extra texture to the filling. It is your cake so feel free to add it if you would like.

Ingredients:
Cake
¾ cup (60 g) cocoa powder
½ cup (150 g) honey
½ cup (118 ml) boiling water
1 cup (210 g) sugar
1 cup (222 g) butter
2 cups (320 g) all-purpose flour
1 tsp (4 g) baking powder
1 ½ tsp (9 g) baking soda
1 tsp (3 g) salt
2 eggs
¾ cup (180 g) sour cream
1 tbsp (15 ml) vanilla extract

Frosting
1 ½ cup (333 g) butter, room temperature
½ cup (114 g) cream cheese, room temperature
¼ cup (75 g) honey
2 tbsp (50 g) salted caramel
3 cups (420 g) powdered sugar

honeycomb (optional)

Preheat your oven to 350°F. While the oven is warming up, place the cocoa powder and honey in a bowl. Carefully pour the boiling water into the bowl and whisk together until smooth.

In another bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

In a stand mixer bowl, cream the butter and sugar together. Add the eggs one at a time. Add the vanilla extract and mix well.

Next, add the cocoa powder and honey mixture to the stand mixer and blend.

Add half of the flour mixture to the stand mixer and blend. Add the sour cream and blend. Finally add the remainder of flour and mix until just combined.

Separate the batter into two separate cake pans (about 650 grams per cake tin). Place in the oven and bake for 25-32 minutes or until done. Once done, place on a cooling rack and allow it to cool completely.

To make the frosting, place the butter, cream cheese, honey, and salted caramel in a bowl. Add the confectioners’ sugar 1 cup at a time.

Continue to add confectioners’ sugar until you are happy with the flavor and make sure the frosting is thick.

To construct your cake, make sure to cut both layers so they are level. Add some frosting to the first layer and if you are using the honeycomb, add it on top of the frosting. Carefully spread additional frosting to slightly cover the honeycomb.

Top with the second layer. Frost the cake to match the image from the game.

Tried my hand at making this… came out wonderfully! But I did add a bit of something for Saint Patrick’s day! Made an Irish Bailey Cream Frosting! Thanks for the recipe, I’m sure it’s going to be a big hit! 🙂
