The Outer Worlds: Saltuna Casserole

December 11, 2019 By Victoria Rosenthal

This past weekend, I finally had enough time to sit down and finish playing through The Outer Worlds. I was surprised how many new food items I was finding all throughout the game. Even in the last area of the game, I yelled out at one point “How is there still more food in this game?!” I really enjoyed my time with the game and found myself going back to see more of the side quests The only character story I completed was Parvati’s and now I’m working on a save right before the last mission to finish the other characters up. Parvati is easily one of my favorite video game characters in the last few years. I really adore her character and was happy to help her reach her end goal. When I finished the game (I sided with Phineas) and heard how her story wrapped up, I was just so happy. If you don’t make sure to help her out, I’ll be disappointed in you!

I was originally planning to do a recipe from the Rizzo’s line but after finishing up Parvati’s side story, I had to make the Terra One Dustback Casserole. The in-game description of this dish is as follows: “A delicious casserole unique to Terra One. Ingredients include but are not limited to saltuna and special mushrooms.” I was excited to pull up my Saltuna recipe and use it in another recipe. Growing up, my mom would make a pretty simple tuna casserole. Now that I think about it, we had a lot of recipes with canned tuna. I probably haven’t had a tuna casserole in 20 years now. Well, it is time to up the casserole game with a delicious helping of Saltuna! I’ve been enjoying the leftover casserole this week for breakfast. The dish is best the day you make it but it has holds up pretty well as a leftover. This dish is sure to win the hearts of all your engineering captains of large space vehicles.

Cream of Mushroom Soup
3 tbsp butter
½ onion, diced
2 garlic, minced
4 baby portobello mushrooms, sliced
2 king oyster mushroom, sliced
6 shiitake mushrooms, sliced
1 tbsp thyme
1 tsp salt
2 tsp pepper
2 ½ cups vegetable broth
1 cup heavy cream

Casserole
1 portion of saltuna, recipe here
12 ounces egg noodles, cooked
8.5 oz sweet peas
2 tbsp butter, melted
3 tbsp panko

Heat a deep pot with butter over medium-high heat. When the butter has melted, add the onions and garlic and cook until the onion has softened, about 4 minutes. Add the mushrooms and thyme.

Cook until the mushrooms have browned slightly, about 10 minutes. Add the broth, bring to a boil, and then reduce the heat to medium. Simmer for 10 minutes.

Transfer to a blender. Return to the pot and heat over medium heat. Add the heavy cream and heat until warmed through.

Preheat oven to 400°F. In a casserole dish, combine the saltuna and cooked egg noodles. Pour the cream of mushroom soup and mix in. Finally, add the sweet peas and lightly mix in. In a small bowl, combine the melted butter and panko.

Sprinkle the top of the casserole with the panko mixture. Place in the oven and cook for 20 minutes, or until the top starts to brown. Remove from the oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
