Last week, RGG Studios released the Kaito Files DLC for Lost Judgment. Jeff and I immediately jumped in and thoroughly enjoyed our time with it. This little bonus story was extremely enjoyable and I’m so happy we got to see a bit more of Kaito and his backstory. As always, I will avoid talking about the story beats, so no worries about spoilers here. Early on, Kaito is offered a very interesting case to work on. When Kaito meets with a new client, he asks Higashi to give him a hand by serving some tea. Kaito says that Higashi always had an expert knowledge of making the perfect tea for any event.
Higashi wasn’t going to say no because he was going to make 50,000 yen to just serve some tea. Since Higashi is such an expert, I felt like his tea wouldn’t just be water and tea but something he would adjust for specific situations. Since this tea serving was to help with a business interaction, I felt the tea should be a bit more of a pick me up and awaken the drinkers rather than calm them. The lemon and ginger add a spark to this drink that really brightens the drink up. When preparing this tea, keep in mind the longer you let the lemon and ginger simmer in the water the stronger the flavor will be.
3 cups water
1 lemon, sliced
1-inch ginger, sliced
pinch kosher salt
1 tbsp sencha
Heat the water, lemon, ginger, and salt in a saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer for 5 to 15 minutes, depending on how strong you want the flavors to be. Remove from the heat and check the temperature; it should be roughly 190°F.
Strain through a mesh strainer to remove the lemons and ginger from the water. Check the temperature to see if it has reduced to about 175°F. If not, transfer to another cup until it reduces to the temperature.
Place the sencha in a teapot and pour the flavored water in. Allow the tea to steep for 3 minutes. Pour into glasses and enjoy immediately.
