Overwatch is turning two years old this week! I still really enjoy playing this game and enjoy the new content we keep getting. My friend Nina hosts and streams a custom game night every week. A large group of us get together and play several casual matches against each other. The matches are filled with many people of different skill levels and they have really helped me improve as a player. Not only has this helped me get better at the game but it has introduced me to many amazing new friends. I now have a large group of people that I’m able to play games with and talk to about the game and the Overwatch League. Overwatch is a game that continues to connect me to many people and I really appreciate the game for that.
Last month, I got really into the competitive 6v6 elimination mode. My husband, two friends, and I queued our way through several games and really enjoyed that new competitive mode. We spent enough time in it that I was actually able to climb into diamond! My favorite part of this mode is how quick each of the matches were. You would go in and each round would be about 2 minutes long. I also really enjoyed how much hero changing it required you to play. I mostly played support classes with the occasional D.Va (since in my group I was the most comfortable playing her). I can’t wait for the next season of this mode to make its return. After placing again in normal competitive mode, I’ve decided that I vastly prefer the 6v6 elimination competitive mode a lot more.
While trying to conceptualize my next recipe for Overwatch, I couldn’t decide which item from Blizzard World I wanted to make next. There are a lot of options, but I want to eventually make my way through most of them. I figured since Overwatch is celebrating its anniversary, it was the perfect time to create this monstrous triple decker burger found at many of the concession stands. Personally, I do not think I would be able to eat a burger of this size at an amusement park. It would make riding the rides a bit difficult and my main goal at a park is to ride every ride ever. But while I’m at home and I feel like I need to drown in a burger, this is now my answer. There is so much going on with this burger that it will keep you full for an entire day (at least that was true for me)! The fun part of making burgers is you can customize them. The assembly instructions here are made to match the image but feel free when making yours to reduce the size and add as little or as much of certain elements as you like.
Ingredients:
Bacon Jam
¾ lb bacon
2 shallots, finely diced
2 garlic cloves, finely diced
3 tbsp brown sugar
½ cup maple syrup
2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 tsp pepper
½ cup bourbon
Cook the bacon in a large frying pan. Do not overcrowd the pan. Once the bacon is cooked, transfer to a paper towel on a plate and set aside. You will have to do this in a few batches.
In the same pan, remove all but about 1 tablespoon of bacon fat. Saute the shallots and garlic until just softened, about 3 minutes. Crumble in the bacon and stir everything together.
Add the brown sugar, maple syrup, apple cider, pepper, and bourbon. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low and allow to simmer for 30 minutes.
Transfer to a food processor and pulse until everything is combined, do not over do it. Place in a sealable container and put in the refrigerator until you are ready to assemble the burger. The jam will be good in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
Sauce
¼ cup +2 tbsp mayo
1 tbsp ketchup
1 tbsp mustard
1 tsp garlic powder
½ tsp paprika
½ tsp fennel
salt
pepper
Whisk together all of the ingredients for the sauce in a small bowl. Taste and season with salt and pepper to your liking. Place in a sealable container and put in the refrigerator until you are ready to assemble the burger. The sauce will be good in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
Sauteed Mushroom and Onions – Enough for 2 burgers
3 button mushrooms, stems removed and sliced
¼ onion, sliced
1 tbsp canola oil
Heat a frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the vegetable oil and allow to heat up. Add the mushrooms and onion. Saute until the vegetables crisp to your liking.
Burger Patties (per burger)
3 – ¼ lb beef patties
garlic powder
salt
pepper
canola oil
2 slices of cheddar cheese
2 slices of prosciutto
Season each of the hamburger patties with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Heat a pan over medium-high heat. Once heated, add 2 teaspoons of canola oil.
Place the patty in the pan and allow it to cook. Feel free to flip and press as much as you want. Cook the patties to 145℉.
Remove 1 of the patties and set aside on a plate with a paper towel. Place the prosciutto on one of the patties. Top both patties with a slice of cheddar cheese on and cover with a lid. Cook until the cheese melts, about 1 minute. Transfer to the plate with the other patties.
Burger Assembly
sesame seed bun (recipe here)
1 tbsp butter, melted
2 tsp pepper
1 tsp garlic powder
lettuce
slices of pickles
Combine the melted butter, pepper, and garlic powder. Slice the bun in half and place on a baking sheet. Brush the inside of each of the buns with the seasoned butter. Place under the broiler and toast until the bun has crisped up.
To assemble the burger, place the bottom bun on a plate. Generously spread the sauce on the bun. Add a few slices of pickles and top with lettuce.
Place the patty with the cheddar cheese. Next, add the sauteed mushrooms and onions.
Add the burger patty with the prosciutto and cheese. Top with the last patty. Scoop a portion of bacon jam on top of the patty. Add additional lettuce. Smear a generous helping of the sauce on the top bun and place on top.
