The Sims 4 is a great way to escape from the madness that is the current real world. To live in a world where you can visit friends and host dinner parties! Please make sure you are wearing a mask in public and being kind to those who have to work during these times. The Sims has always been a game that I can just sit back and relax with. I love being able to enjoy the world and make interesting adventures that I would never do in the real world. At the same time, I always find myself making a Sim that focuses completely on cooking and trying to learn every recipe possible in the game. Each time I jump back into the game, they add even more recipes and I have to learn them all!
I wanted an excuse to make arepas since starting this site and The Sims 4 has given me this chance. Arepas were added to the game when they added the Selvadoradian Food Stall in the Jungle Adventure game pack. My mom is originally from Venezuela and arepas were a staple in our household. These little cornmeal disks can be filled with a large variety of fillings. Typically, we would just use whatever deli meats and cheeses we had. As I grew up, arepas have always been one of my big comfort foods. I’ve slowly learned about additional fillings that could elevate these. I’ve recently fallen in love with arepa rellena con perico, which are arepas filled with scrambled eggs, onions, tomatoes, and cheddar cheese. These arepas are perfect for any meal of the day!
Arepas
1 ¼ cup warm water
pinch of salt
1 cup blanco harina de maiz precocida
Combine the warm water and salt in a large bowl. Add the areparina and mix in with your hands.
The dough should not stick to your hands and be relatively thick. Allow to rest for 3 minutes. Split into 4 equal portions and form each into thick disks. Prepare a pan by rubbing butter all over it. Place the arepas on the pan.
Turn the heat to medium heat, tightly seal with aluminum foil and a pan lid. Cook for 5 to 8 minutes. Uncover and check if the bottoms have turned golden brown, if not cover and cook until it is golden brown. Once flipped, allow to cook, uncovered, the over side until that side is also golden brown. Take off the heat and set aside to slightly cool.
Filling
½ onion, diced
1 roma tomatoes, diced
4 eggs
½ cup cheddar cheese
Whisk together the eggs in a small bowl, set aside. Heat a frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes and cook until just heated up, about 2 minutes. Add the eggs and mix together well. Let sit and cook for about 1 minute. Mix again, the eggs should be still a bit runny.
Reduce the heat to medium. Mix in the cheese and cook until the eggs are cooked through and the cheese is melted. I personally like my eggs to be a little runny. Remove from the heat and fold in the cilantro.
Cut each of the arepas in half and add a small amount of butter to each. Allow it to melt. Split the eggs between the 4 arepas. If you would like to add one more flavor to this meal, feel free to add a quarter of a small avocado to each.
